Do You Hold Your Tongue When it Matters Most?

Martin Luther King once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Dr. King lived those words and spoke his mind freely. But imagine if he’d had an internal rule that forced him to keep his thoughts to himself? If he had lived that rule and held back his true thoughts and feelings, what an enormous loss that would have been for the world.

How many times in your life have you held your tongue, opting for silence out of fear for how people might respond if they knew what you were really thinking? How much of your self have you held back from the people in your life?

One of the keys to shattering your speed limits is to change the rules that keep you locked inside.  There are three things that have to happen for you to give yourself permission to let yourself out:

  1. Surround yourself with people who are open to hearing what you have to say,
  2. Know that the greatest gift you can give to others is you, and
  3. Make a new rule to let yourself out.

Scary? Of course it is. Particularly if you’ve lived most of your life holding in your true thoughts and feelings. So now, ask yourself a question: What’s scarier – speaking your mind, or living in silence?  Then, when you’re ready, open your heart, let the truth come out and enjoy the impact you will make on every life you touch.

I look forward to seeing you on the Fast Track!

Wendy

I know you probably have to disagree, but if you can’t beat them, join them.

Donella – Thanks for your comment. Here are my thoughts: – in business and in life there are times when it seems like it’s more important to be a part of the group than to share our thoughts out loud. And that’s when the ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ thing comes in handy. I think the secret is to make sure that we’re making conscious choices. If we’re going to hold ourselves in and not share our true thoughts and feelings, then we need to be sure that we’re willing to do that in service of getting something else that is important to us. But if we’re doing that on a full-time basis, then the question to ask is, “Am I willing to pretend to be someone I’m not just so I can be with these people?”

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

Thanks for your comment, although I’m sad you believe that. I know many, many people who get exactly what they think they will get because they are strategic about making it happen. Use the Formula in my book (free video on this website tells you all about it) and then come back and tell me if you achieved what you wanted.
